Corfu’s Old Town is a living historic city where fortifications, public spaces, religious buildings and residential quarters reveal the island’s strategic position at the entrance to the Adriatic Sea.
Its urban form reflects successive cultural influences and a long tradition of Mediterranean exchange. The result is a distinctive architectural landscape in which heritage is not separated from everyday life: it is experienced through streets, neighbourhoods, local institutions, cultural activities and community memory.
Within HERITAGE LINKS, Corfu contributes its experience in UNESCO heritage management to a cross-border network dedicated to preservation, sustainable tourism, accessibility, digital innovation and cooperation between Greece and Italy.

PILOT INTERVENTION
St. Catherine of Karofyllatou
The historic complex of St. Catherine of Karofyllatou is a key HERITAGE LINKS intervention in Corfu, supporting the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage as a place for cooperation and knowledge exchange.
The modernisation of the building’s interior and its operational equipment will help create a functional venue for cross-border initiatives, meetings and collaboration among institutions, project partners and heritage professionals.
The intervention connects conservation with contemporary use. It strengthens the relationship between the Old Town’s heritage, institutional capacity and new services designed to support sustainable cultural tourism and coordinated heritage management.
FROM HERITAGE ASSET TO SHARED RESOURCE
A place for cross-border cooperation
The renewed spaces are intended to support the Cross-Border World Heritage Network and provide an operational setting for cultural exchange, professional collaboration and project activities.
