Festa Patronale Maria S.S. della Bruna

The Festa della Bruna is Matera’s most important traditional celebration, held every year on 2 July in honour of Maria Santissima della Bruna, the patron saint of the city.

The event combines religious devotion, popular tradition and collective participation. Throughout the day, processions, music, lights and public gatherings animate the historic centre, creating a unique connection between the community and the urban landscape of Matera.

One of the most characteristic moments is the procession of the decorated papier-mâché float, which crosses the city before reaching Piazza Vittorio Veneto. At the end of the celebration, the float is traditionally dismantled by the crowd in a symbolic and deeply rooted ritual.

The Festa della Bruna is not only a religious event, but also an expression of Matera’s living cultural heritage, passed down through generations and strongly connected to the identity of the local community.
